Description
UTIAS is a part of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto and is home to four major experimental laboratories. Several of these facilities are unique in Canada and among the most advanced worldwide.
This project involved the alteration and revitalization of the existing, one storey 4,650sf research labs. The scope of work consisted of selective demolition, including asbestos abatement, new partial structural framing, metal siding and roofing, major mechanical alterations including the replacement of roof top air make-up units, electrical and security alterations and upgrade, finishes and furnishing.
Continuous operations of the institute was necessary during the life of this project. Therefore, the provision of safe and smooth ingress/egress at the site, maximum control of noise and dust meant that the work being carried out was phased, sequenced, coordinated and performed to allow for minimal disruption to the users.
In addition, in order not to interrupt the functions of various laboratories, some work was carried out after hours and weekends to accommodate necessary mechanical and electrical services shut off and accommodate the noise level caused by certain heavy equipment. All activities that required roof access were scheduled within the roof access time-frame allowed, as the facility’s roof holds research equipment for various experiments and communications activities and access to the roof is prohibited during the operation of the equipment.
