Description

This 11,800sf project involved the complete renovation of Level 03 of Waypoint’s Toanche Building to create a new 20-bed inpatient unit. The project delivered the first psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in Central Ontario dedicated to individuals at increased risk due to severe mental illness.

The unit was thoughtfully designed to accommodate a comprehensive range of services, including psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, and addiction counselling, within a secure and therapeutic environment tailored to mental health care delivery.

Construction began with the careful demolition of existing architectural elements and outdated mechanical and electrical systems. Mechanical modifications were undertaken to meet current healthcare ventilation standards, alongside the installation of new energy-efficient lighting, upgraded audiovisual systems, and enhanced security infrastructure.

This project required meticulous planning and close coordination to maintain uninterrupted hospital operations. A comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control plan was developed and implemented in collaboration with hospital stakeholders to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety throughout all phases of work.
